An 80+ year old friend that Fletcher invited to eat with the Gooks because Mis' Keller wouldn't let him eat there. Smokes a pipe, spills ashes on the floor, forgets he is not outdoors and spits on the floor. Once dropped his teeth in a kettle of Mis' Keller's soup - is dirty, loud and falls asleep all the time even when Mis' Keller is yelling at him. Likes to look at animals. Drops off to sleep while you're talking to him - went to sleep while Mis' Keller bawled him out for knocking over a lamp. - compiled by Richard E. Hunton

Straw boss on a section gang in Belvidere. Went blind and stayed blind for 12 hours from staring at a glazed photo in artificial light. Engaged to be married, he had a photo of his woman in his pocket; while eating lunch at noon, he whipped out the picture and stared at it for 10 minutes, put it in his hip pocket, picked up a shovel and began to scoop gravel - everything went black and he was taken home and put to bed and couldn't see until midnight 12 hours later. Married a woman 44 years old and later died. Never married the woman whose picture made him blind. - compiled by Richard E. Hunton

Moved to Belvidere from Indianapolis, Ohio, then to New York, Ky., then to Los Angeles, Mich., and then to Cleveland, Minn. - married a woman 37 years old, went into the granulated shoestring business, ran away with his brother's wife, automobile, furniture and clothing by mistake, shot a barber for giving him too close a haircut in the elbow and later died. - compiled by Richard E.
