Straw boss on a section gang in Belvidere. Went blind and stayed blind for 12 hours from staring at a glazed photo in artificial light. Engaged to be married, he had a photo of his woman in his pocket; while eating lunch at noon, he whipped out the picture and stared at it for 10 minutes, put it in his hip pocket, picked up a shovel and began to scoop gravel - everything went black and he was taken home and put to bed and couldn't see until midnight 12 hours later.  Married a woman 44 years old and later died.  Never married the woman whose picture made him blind.  - compiled by Richard E.
